“Crazy, huh? I mean, I fought for everything I have. But do you know why I was able to do that?” Liam looked him dead in the eye and said, “You, Chris. I took advantage of you. I fell in love, got married, and had children because I knew you would save me again if I got it wrong.”
“You’re right, I would.” He wasn’t ashamed to admit that.
Given provocation, he would do whatever it took to protect the ones he loved, especially the ones who couldn’t defend themselves. Liam was still at the top of that list, right there with Owen who had fought back and punished himself for doing it. Red was there, Javier… the list of people he would protect might have grown, but he didn’t feel taken advantage of. He felt needed. Bull called it a hero complex, and Chris was okay with that.
“Liam, did you get it wrong?” More than knowing what he was willing to do, he needed Liam to know he had nothing to fear. “Tell me, brother. Did you get it wrong?”
“I think—” Liam started and stopped, and Chris was happy to wait for him to work it through. Deep down, beneath the surface and old fears that hung on far too long, he was certain Liam knew the answer. “No, I know I got it right this time.”
“I know you did too.”
“Will you come to therapy with me? I didn’t want to ask because, well, you didn’t seem interested in talking about…” Liam shook his head, not needing to say it for both of them to understand. “But maybe you can help me explain to him what I’ve been afraid of. I think I’ve been frustrating him.”
“He just didn’t know what question to ask.” And while he absolutely had no desire to talk about David or that night or any of the shit that happened as a result, he would go to therapy for Liam. “Just tell me when. I’ll be happy to go.”
“Happy. You use that word a lot lately.”
“I have a lot to be grateful for and more on the way, and I don’t ever want to take this feeling for granted.” Never wanted to get so comfortable that he forgot to cherish the people who made it all possible.
“More on the way?” Liam’s eyes narrowed. “Is there something you need to tell me?”
“Owen and I do, yes. He’s just waiting for word to bring everyone up.” Because Chris wouldn’t disrespect his husband by making their announcement to adopt without him. “I just needed to be sure we were good first.”
“We’re always good,” Liam promised. “Because bros stick together no matter what.”
He was counting on it.
Thank you
Thank you for taking the time to read Creating Perfection, the tenth book in the Sizzling Miami series. Liam and Billy’s journey to fatherhood wasn’t easy, but I believe it was worth it and I hope you do as well. As for this series, I’m working on Jacky’s book next and then Saving Saul. After that, I believe I will put this series into retirement with a possible where are they now book in the future. The Fishing Lawyer, the sequel to Their Reason, will cross over into Devils Pride and will be part of that series.
Beyond that…well, as always, it will be as much of a surprise to me as it is to you.
Two ways to stay on top of my upcoming releases is to join my Facebook Group and sign up for my newsletter.
I hope you enjoyed reading Creating Perfection as much as I enjoyed stepping back into this world and, if you have a few minutes, that you’ll take the time to leave a review.
Thank you,
